new art

It’s been a long time since I’ve dug around on Etsy. Partially because I’ve been busy, but mainly because I always fall in love with so many wonderful things and have a seriously hard time escaping with an empty cart…
…and so, voilà – today’s purchase: an antler drawing and flower photograph
{by Etsy seller kariherer}

Praia Piquinia

I absolutely adore this photograph. So much so that I have considered purchasing it on a daily basis for the past few weeks… I think that means it’s time to take the plunge and make it mine…

A message from the artist, Christian Chaize:
“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” – Marcel Proust

Five years ago, Portugal did present itself as a new landscape in my life – both literally and metaphorically. Since then, I have photographed exclusively along a very small stretch of its southern coastline. Returning to this specific place, I’ve sought out its nuances. In doing so, I have peeled back layers of how I see, and how I experience this magical environment.

For purchase here on one of my most favorite websites, 20×200.

illustrated recipes

I just spent the evening prepping food for a bbq tomorrow night so you can only imagine my excitement upon seeing these wonderful illustrated recipes after I finally finished in the kitchen. I would LOVE to have one of these framed in the kitchen. Simply scrumptious!

in a stitch

England-based artist Sam Gibson creates whimsical hand-embroidered pieces with contemporary pop-art images that would be fantastic and fun hanging on any wall. I especially love the single thread hanging from the balloon and comb giving the art a playful 3D effect. Check out his etsy shop, Samskiart here.

fruit stickers and tea tags

I love images of collections such as these. There is something so appealing about a variety of “things” be it fruit stickers or tea tags. Somehow, when presented in a group they become art. Instantly!

ampersand id chart

Love this ampersand id chart by Douglas Wilson – based on the traditional eye chart. Each comes with an identification key that details the names and weights of all 61 ampersands (see below). There is a limited edition of 110 prints so get it while you can!

places on earth map

The Places on Earth Map is a beautifully hand drawn map of the whole world. The map comes with pins so you can mark where you’ve been and where you’d like to go next…  I am beginning to think my future home will have a designated map room.

abacus abacus

While it has been a long time since I’ve used one, I always thought the abacus was a pretty nifty. I never would have considered them as wall art, but these two over sized abacuses are super colorful and definitely caught my eye. I like ‘em a lot.

DIY art inspired by sewing

I am obsessed with the simplicity and fun of this DIY project I spotted over on Design*Sponge. These use “swatches” of ribbons and buttons as an example, but the same project can also be done with beads, fabric and decorative papers. Click here to download two 8×10 design templates to use for your own collection.

new york in legos

Christoph Niemann is an amazing illustrator whose works have appeared on the covers of The New Yorker, Wired, The New York Times Magazine and American Illustration. He is the force behind Abstract City – a New York Times blog (and a personal favorite) so I was delighted to come across his new book I LEGO N.Y. a playful homage to New York City constructed entirely out of LEGOs.

visa stamps

I am always so excited to get a new visa stamp when I travel. I remember when backpacking in Europe eight years ago (wow, cant believe how long its been…) my friends and I would go out of our way to make sure we got stamps when on the eurorail since they don’t always come around and stamp. I love the varieties of looks and colors and memories that become attached to seeing a country’s mark on your passport. These images of international landmarks (and the beatles..) really make me smile.

neighborhood love: DUMBO

I had a meeting in DUMBO yesterday (for those of you who don’t know, DUMBO stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) and even though I didn’t get a chance to enjoy the breathtaking views of Manhattan or walk the cobble stone streets for long enough it was lovely to stop by. I love the bridges, old train tracks, eclectic boutiques, restaurants and galleries this neighborhood offers. Always a pleasure DUMBO, always a pleasure.

paper roll art part deux

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… I am blown away by the creative vision and ability artists have to turn every day objects into wonderful and surprising works of art. This is my second post about paper roll art (who would have guessed that!) but these little worlds artist Anastassia Elias (more on that site) created inside these cardboard rolls make me smile to big not to share…

Today I went to the Tim Burton exhibit at MoMA. It was phenomenal. All you New Yorkers go check it out!

letterpress print

I love typography and I love alphabet prints. This one is absolutely brilliant. Jessica Hische of Daily Drop Cap hand printed these letterpress limited edition posters (only 75 made) and I would be so happy if someone purchased one of them for me.

antique fashion

Looking at those lovely pictures of Paris yesterday inspired this post of amazing vintage french fashion sketches from the 1920s for sale at etsy store Le Petit Poulailler. Makes me wanna go back in time and shop for days…or maybe just buy a few prints and hang them on my walls to admire…

chalk art

I am a huge fan of chalkboards and chalk art so I was very excited to see these handcrafted chalk boards for sale on etsy. The shop features wheeled, human powered transportation devices (bicycles, tricycles, wagons, etc.) drawn in chalk…

This chalkboard (a NYC street find) hangs in my living room. It’s one of my most favorite things.

Canvas Pop

How cool is this!? Use Canvas Pop to print your photos on canvas pro style… From any source, any resolution or size – and customized to your wishes – your photos and digital images become stunning custom art. All you do is upload an image (from your cell phone, digital camera, photoshop, facebook, flickr…) choose your size and customize, and then your canvas art is delivered, ready to inspire. I am definitely giving this a try…

irving penn: small trades

Today I went to the Getty Museum to see the Irving Penn: Small Trades exhibit for the second time. Penn spent substantial time in New York, London, and Paris taking portraits of individuals in their work attire and with the tools of their trade. He was especially interested in occupations that would likely be replaced with technological advancements and changing times… I love that.

paper roll art

I am always so impressed by the ability people have to turn every day objects into beautiful works of art. I am amazed by these paper roll forest cut outs by Yuken Teruya Studio. Absolutely gorgeous!

I am a huge fan of exposed bulbs as light fixtures. This is a paper lantern by Japanese designer Kyouei Okamoto. I like the fusion of industrial and traditional elegance.

everybody needs art

20×200 is a project created by Jen Bekman based on the realization
that there are a lot of people who want to buy art and a lot of people
making art, they just have a hard time finding each other.
She realized this fantastic formula:
(limited editions x low price) + the internet = art for everyone.
Two limited editions pieces are introduced each week and are available in
different sizes, prices, and edition count – starting at $20. I love that artists
have an opportunity to explain their method and style, giving potential
buyers real insight into their creative process. This is a site worth checking out…

city print

I forgot how much I love these Ork City Neighborhood Posters until I came home and saw the Los Angeles one hanging on the wall of my parent’s house. Each city (and there are many more then the ones above…) comes in poster or screen print version and a few different colors. Every time I look at ours I notice a new neighborhood! ($22-$27)

wow worthy tape

Rebecca Ward‘s instillations are made entirely out of tape. I love the unique textural quality and the way space is manipulated with the layering of lines. The colors are pretty fabulous too…
I must say, I am pretty surprised that this is my second post about tape art! Remember the packing tape portraits

stick with blik

Wall decals are one of the easiest ways to transform a room and for that reason I am a huge fan. This is the perfect alternative for those looking to add color or style to a space without the commitment to something more permanent, like paint or wallpaper. These decals are cheap, easy to apply, easy to remove and some are even reusable.

This grandfather clock decal is in my apartment entry way. We added a working clock to the face, bringing it to life…
wall stickerHere are a few of the more simpler decals from Blik

There are so many great themes to choose from – cityscapes, animals, arcade games, music, pop art and fine art – to name a few… Oh, it’s also possible to customize and design your own!

check out the tape

space-of-suspense-4I was introduced to artist Mark Khaisman by my mother who while traveling happened upon an exhibit featuring his work. These pieces are made entirely out of translucent packing tape that has been applied to plexiglass and placed in front of a light box, revealing incredible shadow and depth. I find this unconventional method by which Khaisman interprets scenes and images to be quite intriguing and mesmerizing.

she hit pause

girl with airplaneBrooklyn based photographer Matt Schwartz is the mastermind behind the ethereal prints of she hit pause. studios. The dreamy scenes will instantly transport you to an unexpected world of beauty, glamour, sexual fantasy and aesthetic gratification – a curious throwback to a time when even a tiny bit of female skin could set a boy’s heart racing. Shooting in large format Polaroid, Matt’s prints are pulled apart and the film negative is rubbed onto watercolor paper to create a transfer. The result is an arresting image that appears to be a synthesis of an old photograph and a painting combined. This contemporary technique results in images that are timeless: memories held on to forever.Picture 5legs by the fireplace

I first saw Matt’s work at the DUMBO Flea Market last summer, and the only reason I haven’t purchased a print yet, is because I can’t decide which one to get! I simply love them all…
