new art

It’s been a long time since I’ve dug around on Etsy. Partially because I’ve been busy, but mainly because I always fall in love with so many wonderful things and have a seriously hard time escaping with an empty cart…
…and so, voilà – today’s purchase: an antler drawing and flower photograph
{by Etsy seller kariherer}

Praia Piquinia

I absolutely adore this photograph. So much so that I have considered purchasing it on a daily basis for the past few weeks… I think that means it’s time to take the plunge and make it mine…

A message from the artist, Christian Chaize:
“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” – Marcel Proust

Five years ago, Portugal did present itself as a new landscape in my life – both literally and metaphorically. Since then, I have photographed exclusively along a very small stretch of its southern coastline. Returning to this specific place, I’ve sought out its nuances. In doing so, I have peeled back layers of how I see, and how I experience this magical environment.

For purchase here on one of my most favorite websites, 20×200.

Persona

A friend showed me this series of photographs called Persona, by Jason Travis. These wonderfully voyeuristic portraits of Atlanta locals are shown above the contents from their bags, totes, backpacks and/or clutches to determine “what they deem important in their lives.” See more here.

faux food art

Look closely – these plates of food are not what they seem. I’ll give you a hint… I spy balloons and mini basketballs. These beauties by David Sykes are for sale.

book sculptures

I like the look of these photographs of book sculptures by Paul Octavious.
Fun stuff.

looking into the past

This collection of photographs on flickr is amazing! Images are made by finding old photographs of places, printing them out, and then holding the print up in the modern day location that the original photograph was taken. So cool.

Today I went to the Getty Museum to see the Irving Penn: Small Trades exhibit for the second time. Penn spent substantial time in New York, London, and Paris taking portraits of individuals in their work attire and with the tools of their trade. He was especially interested in occupations that would likely be replaced with technological advancements and changing times… I love that.

the decade in news photographs

The Decade In News Photographs on the Boston Globe website is a mesmerizing collection of 50 images, many of which are graphic and truly quite brutal – natural disasters and terrorism stand out as the prominent theme (none of which are included below). Here are a few I found particularly amazing (and are safe for all eyes)….
This is called the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Starting in late 2003, astronomers pointed Hubble at a tiny, relatively empty part of our sky (only a few stars from the Milky Way visible), and created an exposure nearly 12 days long over a four-month period. Some 10,000 galaxies were observed in this tiny patch of sky (a tenth the size of the full moon) – each galaxy a home to billions of stars.
Drummers perform during the Opening Ceremony for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics at the National Stadium on August 8, 2008 in Beijing.
This picture taken 02 November 2007 shows a natural peatland forest next to cleared peatland which are prepared for acacia plantation in Kampar, outside Pekanbaru, Riau. Peatland which is dense, swampy forest that efficiently soaks up greenhouse gases from the world’s worst polluters, when healthy.

Hello to the lovely Leica M7 “Hermes” Edition Camera…
These will go fast – only 200 camera’s are being made.

everybody needs art

20×200 is a project created by Jen Bekman based on the realization
that there are a lot of people who want to buy art and a lot of people
making art, they just have a hard time finding each other.
She realized this fantastic formula:
(limited editions x low price) + the internet = art for everyone.
Two limited editions pieces are introduced each week and are available in
different sizes, prices, and edition count – starting at $20. I love that artists
have an opportunity to explain their method and style, giving potential
buyers real insight into their creative process. This is a site worth checking out…

she hit pause

girl with airplaneBrooklyn based photographer Matt Schwartz is the mastermind behind the ethereal prints of she hit pause. studios. The dreamy scenes will instantly transport you to an unexpected world of beauty, glamour, sexual fantasy and aesthetic gratification – a curious throwback to a time when even a tiny bit of female skin could set a boy’s heart racing. Shooting in large format Polaroid, Matt’s prints are pulled apart and the film negative is rubbed onto watercolor paper to create a transfer. The result is an arresting image that appears to be a synthesis of an old photograph and a painting combined. This contemporary technique results in images that are timeless: memories held on to forever.Picture 5legs by the fireplace

I first saw Matt’s work at the DUMBO Flea Market last summer, and the only reason I haven’t purchased a print yet, is because I can’t decide which one to get! I simply love them all…
